Spectacular high quality table wine carafe, pear shaped cut glass body with fern and bird decoration, set with an elaborate silver plated collar and handle decorated with masks; antique English Aesthetic Movement fashion, 1880s.

Style note — Aesthetic style was very popular in the 1870s and 1880s. The homewares in Aesthetic fashion were elegantly designed and useful; the decoration had to be aesthetic, which meant elegant, tasteful and not garish. Design elements were inspired by the imports of ceramics, lacquer furniture and fabrics from the Far East, especially Japan.

Facts of Lavish Fun bit — “Do you know the Bishop of Norwich?” is a traditional polite British reminder at the dinner table to pass the port. Apparently that Bishop was a rather forgetful chap.
